Lewisham Controlled parking schemes

Over the last 7 years, lewisham have embarked on a strategy of implementing then extending CPZ schemes.

CPZ schemes tend to create parking problems in streets just outside CPZ areas. CPZ schemes started near train stations and the town center, where there are sometimes parking problems for residents. We will call these level 1 CPZs.

These Level 1 CPZs increase parking pressures on areas just outside the scheme area. Lewisham then run a consultation just outside the new CPZ area. Often residents will then agree to this level 2 CPZ. This in turn puts pressure on the streets just outside the level 2 area. Lewisham will then start cosulting for level 3 CPZs. If residents agree, then we have a level 3 CPZ and so on. In some small pockets, residents will reject CPZs. When the area is surrounded by CPZs, the remainder areas will have no choice but to capitulate, or this is what NCP and the London Mayor would like to see.

Lewisham initially consulted on large CPZ areas. Since there has been a substantial fight back from residents in Hither Green and Sydenham, Lewisham appear to be embarking on a strategy of many, smaller CPZ schemes.

The approach Lewisham are taking to CPZ schemes requires a co-ordinated approach from residents of Lewisham to fight the spread of CPZs. If you are in an area which borders a CPZ, and you have parking problems, you should lobby your councillors and the mayor to remove the CPZ which is causing you the trouble, not vote for a CPZ in your area too.

I don't want a CPZ. What can I do?

  • The numbers of returns on each consultation are small. Your voice will make a difference. Complete your questionnaire from the council clearly stating that you don't want a controlled parking zone.
  • Organise an action group in your street.
  • Request a consultation form for each member of your household and make sure they are filled in and returned by the due date.
  • Write to the Mayor, clearly stating "I do not want controled parking in my street, or in Lewisham". Send to Steve Bullock. Mayor of Lewisham, Lewisham Town Hall, Catford, London, SE6 4RU. E-mail steve.bullock@lewisham.gov.uk.
